Nigeria’s national electricity grid has suffered another collapse, plunging the country into a nationwide blackout and marking the second system failure recorded in 2026 within one week.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that electricity generation dropped to 0 megawatts at about 11:00 am on Tuesday, indicating a total shutdown of the national grid.
Following the collapse, power allocation to major electricity distribution companies fell to zero. Distribution companies affected include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola DisCos.
The development left homes, businesses and public infrastructure across the country without electricity, once again highlighting the fragility of Nigeria’s power supply system.

As of the time of filing this report, electricity sector authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the collapse or timelines for restoration.
