A storm is brewing in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State as the Personal Assistant to the Honourable Member representing Ekiti Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly has directed political appointees & LGA Legislative Council to contribute money for the mobilisation of support for the Kwara State Speaker, Hon Danladi.
According to sources, the directive has been met with widespread disappointment and discontent among the political appointees, with one of them expressing frustration that it was uncalled for, especially since funds had already been released for the event.
“It’s unacceptable that we’re being asked to contribute money for this event when we’ve already been told that funds have been allocated for it,” the source said. “We’re government workers and political appointees, not beggars. Why are we being asked to pay for something that’s supposed to be a government function?”
As of the time of filing this report, the event was set to go ahead, but there was a noticeable lack of attendance, reflecting the mood of the people of Ekiti LGA.
“It’s clear that the people are not happy with this move,” another source said. “They’re not going to support an event that is being funded by their own pockets. It’s a shame.”
The controversy has raised questions about the use of government resources and the treatment of civil servants and political appointees in the state.
When contacted, the PA to the Honourable Member was not available to comment on the matter, and attempts to reach the Speaker’s office for a response were unsuccessful.
The development has sparked concerns about the transparency and accountability of government officials in Kwara State, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold.
