The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unveiled plans to assign a unique digital postcode to every addressable building across Nigeria as part of efforts to modernise the country’s addressing system and improve service delivery.
Speaking during the unveiling of the Post Code Delineation Model Validation 2026 in Abuja on Monday, the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, said the initiative would create a technology-driven address framework capable of identifying every building with a machine-readable code.
According to Odeyemi, the National Digital Postcode System will place Nigeria among the first countries in Africa to develop a detailed postcode structure that extends down to individual buildings.
She explained that the project is designed to enhance logistics operations, emergency response services, postal delivery, e-commerce activities, and government planning by making locations easier to identify nationwide.

“Postcode is basically a framework used to have a machine-readable standard location address for every addressable building in Nigeria,” she said.
Why Nigeria Needs a Digital Postcode System
As reported by NewKwara Media Online, Nigeria has struggled for years with an inefficient and inconsistent addressing system, creating challenges for postal services, delivery companies, emergency responders, and public institutions.
Odeyemi noted that creating a nationwide postcode system requires different approaches due to Nigeria’s diverse geography and settlement patterns.
She explained that what works in northern states such as Jigawa State may not be suitable for riverine areas like Bayelsa State because of differences in population density, terrain, and building distribution.
“Nigeria is a large country with different geographical realities. The logic that works for one region may not work for another,” she stated.
Lagos, Abuja Among Areas Being Mapped
The NIPOST chief revealed that ongoing validation exercises are aimed at ensuring aerial mapping data accurately reflects real-life settlement patterns on the ground.
She cited densely populated areas such as Mushin and compared them with parts of Abuja, noting that population concentration and building density vary significantly across the country.
According to her, postcode boundaries will also be aligned with existing administrative structures to prevent overlaps between local government areas and other official boundaries.

Experts believe the National Digital Postcode System could transform how businesses and government agencies operate by making addresses easier to locate and verify.
The initiative is expected to support:

With the validation phase now underway, NIPOST says the project represents a major step toward creating a modern, standardised, and digitally enabled addressing system for Africa’s most populous nation.
