KANO State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, may forward the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly next week as a nominee for deputy governor, following the resignation of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Sources indicated that three names are under consideration to replace the former deputy governor.
They include the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Usman Fagore, a member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Rurum; and Garo, who was the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general election.
Findings revealed that although the governor was initially inclined toward Fagore, influential stakeholders within the political circle are backing Garo for the position.
Sources further noted that Garo’s political alignment and previous role in the 2023 elections, as well as his association with Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, could strengthen political representation within the current administration and signal inclusion of legacy APC members following recent political realignments in the state.
Meanwhile, additional details have emerged regarding Gwarzo’s resignation, with insiders describing it as a strategic move to avert impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly.
A source familiar with the development said the decision followed a ruling by a Federal High Court in Kano, which declined an application to halt the impeachment process.According to the source, the move was considered necessary to preserve Gwarzo’s political prospects ahead of the 2027 elections.
The source added that there are ongoing political calculations within the Kwankwasiyya movement, led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, including the possibility of positioning Gwarzo for a future governorship bid under a different political platform.
The development comes amid recent high-profile visits to Kwankwaso in Kano, including those by Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson.
While the visits were publicly described as courtesy calls, sources suggested they may have included discussions on potential political alliances.Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Kano State Government and the office of the former deputy governor were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
