Kaiama Grammar School, Kaiama, and Federal Government Girls College, Imiringi, have emerged as the biggest winners at the 9th edition of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Science Quiz Competition for Secondary Schools in Bayelsa State.
As reported by NewKwara Media Online, the grand finale of the competition took place on Wednesday at the Nigerian Content Tower Conference Centre in Swali, Yenagoa, where some of the state’s brightest young minds battled for top honours.
At the end of the keenly contested event, Kaiama Grammar School and Federal Government Girls College secured the top positions, while Apex Academy, Yenagoa, finished as the second runner-up.
The winning schools did not leave empty-handed. Organisers rewarded them with modern laboratory equipment, anatomical skeleton models, microscopes, electronic compact scales, and standard printers to support science education in their institutions.

In addition, the six students who represented the three winning schools were each presented with brand-new HP laptops to aid their academic and digital learning journey.
Speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of the NCDMB, Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by the General Manager of Corporate Communications, Obinna Ezeobi, said the competition reflects the Board’s long-standing commitment to educational development and capacity building.
According to him, the partnership between NCDMB and NTA has remained strong for nine consecutive years because both organisations share a common vision of promoting education and empowering future generations.
He explained that the science quiz was created to encourage students to embrace science and technology, describing both fields as critical to the future of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry and the wider economy.
Ogbe noted that the industry requires a steady pipeline of skilled professionals to replace retiring workers and sustain growth in the sector.
He also highlighted several educational interventions by the Board, including the establishment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centres in schools across Nigeria. The facilities, he said, are equipped with laptops, servers, smartboards, reliable power supply systems, and teacher training programmes.
“We hope to ignite your passion for innovation and inspire you to develop solutions that will transform the oil and gas industry as well as other sectors of the economy,” he said.
Addressing the students, Ezeobi urged them to make productive use of their newly acquired laptops by learning valuable digital skills rather than focusing solely on entertainment.
Also speaking, the General Manager of NTA Yenagoa, Mrs Mary Ekanem, praised the NCDMB for sustaining the competition after it faced financial challenges that threatened its continuity.
She described the Board as a dependable partner helping the NTA fulfil its educational mandate, adding that the quiz competition encourages students to read, learn and expand their knowledge.
Ekanem further noted that beyond education, the NTA remains committed to promoting national unity and ensuring that citizens are adequately informed through balanced and objective information dissemination.
The Coordinator of the Science Quiz Competition, David Oyintare Enemiebor, commended the NCDMB for expanding participation from 16 schools to 32 schools and for enhancing the competition’s prestige through the provision of quality prizes.
“NCDMB has made a remarkable impact on this programme,” he said.
The event ended with the presentation of prizes to the winning schools and the students who distinguished themselves during the competition.
The annual science quiz has continued to serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing young talents, while encouraging excellence in science, technology and innovation among secondary school students in Bayelsa State.
