The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Friday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging Nigerians to draw lessons from the Prophet Muhammad’s life and uphold values such as compassion, humility and service to others.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,”he said.
Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace and national cohesion, noting that the responsibility of preserving the country’s unity rests on everyone.
He called for peaceful and restrained celebrations, with citizens encouraged to show mutual respect throughout the occasion.
The minister wished the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid while reaffirming the commitment of the present administration to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.
