India has temporarily restricted access to Telegram as authorities intensify efforts to prevent examination malpractice ahead of a nationwide medical entrance examination retake, NewKwara Media Online reports.
The restriction comes after a major scandal involving the alleged leak of examination questions that forced authorities to cancel and reschedule one of the country’s most important tests for aspiring doctors.
According to Indian authorities, access to Telegram was blocked on Tuesday and will remain restricted until June 22, the date scheduled for the fresh examination. Certain platform features, including the ability to edit messages, will reportedly remain limited until June 30.
Officials said the move was necessary after investigations revealed that organised cheating syndicates had allegedly used Telegram channels to circulate leaked examination materials and deceive candidates.

Why India Took Action
The affected examination is the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), one of the most competitive academic examinations in India. Every year, more than two million students sit for the test in a bid to secure admission into medical schools.
The examination was cancelled in May following widespread allegations that question papers had been leaked before the test. Reports suggested that some of the leaked materials were shared through Telegram groups and channels.
The controversy sparked nationwide outrage, particularly among students and parents who had spent years preparing for the highly competitive examination.
Protests and Public Anger
The scandal quickly grew into a national issue, triggering protests by young people and calls for accountability from government officials.
Many students argued that the integrity of the examination process had been compromised, while opposition figures and activists demanded stronger action against those responsible.
India’s National Testing Agency stated that the restrictions were introduced in the interest of maintaining public order and protecting the credibility of the examination process.
Investigation Leads to Arrest
Authorities have also intensified investigations into the leak.
India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently announced the arrest of a man described as the alleged mastermind behind the examination paper leak. Reports identified him as a chemistry lecturer who was involved in the examination process.
The government has also launched a dedicated online platform where members of the public can report suspicious activities, fake claims, unauthorised content, and other forms of examination-related fraud.

The incident has once again highlighted the intense pressure faced by millions of students in India.
With limited opportunities and fierce competition for professional careers, many young people spend years preparing for entrance examinations in the hope of securing a stable future.
