Amid the deafening silence from former President Goodluck Jonathan on whether he will contest the 2027 elections, the Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Dr Tanimu Turaki, is set to ratify his nomination as the camp’s presidential candidate.
The party announced on Thursday that it would hold a special national convention this Saturday to ratify the candidacy of the former president for the polls.
The National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, and the National Organising Secretary, Honourable Theophilus Dakas Shan, who jointly made the disclosure, explained that the event would ratify the nomination of Jonathan as “the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”
The Turaki-led INWC unveiled its plan barely 24 hours after the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, led by Honourable Abdulrahman Mohammed, also at a separate ceremony, settled for Senator Sandy Ojang Onor as the party’s presidential candidate through “consensus affirmation”.

The Turaki-led INWC had last week announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole presidential contestant.
The announcement was made without any public evidence indicating that Jonathan either expressed interest in contesting the election or purchased nomination forms.
The former president has also remained silent over the dramatic development as both the NWC and the INWC continue their parallel preparations towards the 2027 general elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognises the Mohammed-led NWC on its portal following judicial interventions in the lingering PDP leadership crisis, including the April 30 Supreme Court judgment.
A team of nine officials from INEC was on hand on Wednesday to witness the affirmation of Senator Onor at the PDP’s Wadada Plaza national secretariat in Abuja.
While the judgement was thought to have laid the crisis to rest, the PDP has continued to function as two different factions, with each insisting that legitimacy belongs to it.
It remains unclear what shape the unfolding drama will take in the days ahead.
