147 bag first-class honours as OOU graduates 5,808 students

A total of 5,808 graduands will receive varying academic honours at the 35th convocation ceremonies of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye.

According to the vice chancellor of the university, Professor Ayodeji Johnson Agboola, out of this number, 147 will receive First Class honours; 2,051, Second Class (Upper Division); and 2,927, Second Class (Lower Division), while 571 others will receive Third Class honours.

Bachelor’s degree graduands from the different faculties will receive the honours on Thursday and Friday, January 29, and Friday 30, 2026, while higher degrees and diplomas as well as honorary degrees will be awarded on Saturday, January 31 2026.

The grand finale will also feature a Convocation Lecture entitled ‘Repositioning Nigerian Universities as Innovation Hubs for Entrepreneurship and National Development’, to be delivered by the Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani.

Addressing a pre-convocation press conference on Thursday, Professor Agboola noted that the university under his leadership had continued to climb in global rankings, driven by academic excellence and impactful research.

He noted that all the programmes of the university currently enjoy 100 per cent accreditation status.

Professor Agboola also listed some academic programmes recently introduced to include Logistics and Supply, Marketing, Advertising, Food Technology, Film and Multimedia Studies, Journalism, Broadcasting and Public Relations.

He spoke of ongoing efforts in forging partnerships with leading institutions and industries aimed at boosting student mobility, research impact and entrepreneurial opportunities.

The vice chancellor announced that an alumnus of the university, Omoba Murphy Adekoya, chairman of WosAm Arena, would on Wednesday, January 28, be performing the groundbreaking of an International Conference Centre, which comprises a 5000-seater hall, two other breakout halls and other accessories.

He expressed appreciation to stakeholders, alumni and industry partners for their different contributions to the university’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

While fielding questions from newsmen during the press conference, Professor Agboola disclosed that a total of 5,613 students of the university had benefited from NELFUND loans during the current academic session, while another 1,270 recently applied.

The Overall Best Graduating Student, who will be announced and celebrated during the climax of the convocation ceremonies, is Ajayi David Bamidele from the Department of Civil Engineering.

Ajayi emerged as the overall best with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.89.
