A Kano State High Court has sentenced three men to death by hanging after finding them guilty of killing their friend, a carpenter identified as Abba Aminu Yalwa, over a debt.

The convicts; Sagir Lawan, Kabiru, and Alaramma — were said to have conspired to murder the victim, who was also their close friend, at Danbare Quarters in Kano.

According to the prosecution led by Barrister Aminu Ado Bello, the tragic incident occurred after the deceased lent money to the first defendant, Sagir Lawan.

When Yalwa later demanded repayment, Sagir allegedly lured him to Danbare under the guise of inspecting a plot of land.

Once there, Sagir reportedly teamed up with his accomplices, Kabiru and Alaramma, to attack Yalwa, stabbing him in the stomach and leaving him to die.

The trio were arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contrary to sections of the Kano State Penal Code. They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecution presented six witnesses who testified against the defendants, providing evidence that linked them to the crime.

Delivering judgment, Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji declared that the court was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the three men committed the offence.

He subsequently convicted them and sentenced all three to death by hanging.

The courtroom was said to have fallen silent as the judge pronounced the sentence, bringing an end to the years-long case that had drawn public attention in Kano.
