The Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Imam Yunus Olushina Teliat, has strongly denied any link or sympathy with terrorism, banditry, or criminal activities, following recent allegations circulating online.
In a firm statement released on Sunday, the cleric described the claims as “baseless” and “deeply damaging,” insisting that his life and teachings have always been rooted in peace, justice, and the protection of human life.
The clarification comes amid heightened tension and public reactions following the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers by armed attackers in Ogbomoso, an incident that sparked widespread concern and online speculation.
“I must state unequivocally and in the strongest possible terms: I am not a sympathiser of terrorism, banditry or criminal elements in any shape or form. I do not condone, excuse, or tolerate acts of criminality under any guise whatsoever,” he said.

The cleric stressed that throughout his years in spiritual leadership and academic work, he has consistently preached against violence, repeatedly using Friday sermons and public lectures to condemn kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry as serious crimes against both Islamic teachings and humanity.
He further revealed that he has, on several occasions, called for strict legal consequences for perpetrators of such acts, describing it as a necessary step to deter crime and protect innocent lives.
“I have gone as far as publicly calling for capital punishment to be meted out by the state to anyone found culpable in these heinous acts, as a deterrent to preserve the fabric of society,” he added.
Visibly concerned about what he described as a coordinated attempt to damage his reputation, the Chief Imam warned bloggers, vloggers, and social media users to stop linking his name to criminal activity or spreading false narratives about him.
He also confirmed that his legal team has been engaged and has already begun action against individuals he accused of publishing defamatory content.
“We will not hesitate to prosecute any further purveyors of falsehood to the fullest extent of the law,” he warned.
Despite the controversy, the cleric said his focus remains unchanged: praying for peace in Oyo State and across Nigeria, as well as for victims of insecurity nationwide.
