The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to impacting lives beyond revenue generation and border enforcement with the commissioning of renovated classrooms, toilets and a solar-powered borehole at Malam Alhassan Primary School in the Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Adeniyi made this known during the commissioning of newly renovated classroom blocks and the donation of educational and medical materials to the school located in the Maigatari border community.
Speaking at the event, the Comptroller-General explained that the intervention was executed under the Service’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative known as “Customs Care”.
According to him, the project included the construction of 16 ventilated improved pit latrines, installation of desks, development of a botanical garden, and the provision of a solar-powered borehole to enhance water supply and hygiene within the school and the surrounding community.

He stressed that sustainable national development requires institutions to extend their impact beyond enforcement duties to meaningful social investment.
“Education remains the foundation upon which economic growth, social stability and national cohesion are built,” Adeniyi said, noting that these pillars align with national development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Under the current intervention in Maigatari, over 1,800 educational materials—including school bags, exercise books, pens, pencils and rulers—are to be distributed to pupils to boost learning outcomes.
Adeniyi also pledged an additional phase of support for the school, announcing plans to construct a perimeter fence to enhance security.
“Children can only learn effectively in a safe environment. Having assessed the needs of this school, we will provide an adequate fence to ensure the safety of pupils and staff,” he said.
The Zonal Coordinator, Zone B, Assistant Comptroller-General Nsikan Patrick Umoh, described the project as part of a broader institutionalised CSR framework adopted by the Service.
She noted that since its formal inauguration in March 2025 in Abuja, the initiative has been extended to several communities across the South-West and South-South regions and is now expanding nationwide.
According to her, the CSR framework operates through multi-stakeholder collaboration involving government agencies, non-governmental organisations, private sector partners and host communities.
She added that the funding mechanism includes structured contributions amounting to four per cent of officers’ salaries, alongside voluntary donations.
In their goodwill messages, Chairman of Maigatari Local Government Area, Usman Na’Allah, and community leader, Alhaji Isa Dangalan, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for the gesture.
Similarly, the Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Budget, Alhaji Babangida Umar, expressed appreciation, describing the intervention as a welcome complement to government efforts aimed at improving educational infrastructure in the state.
