The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has registered more than 277,000 new members in the ongoing electronic membership registration exercise.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq disclosed this on Monday while receiving the party’s National Vice Chairman for the North Central zone, Alhaji Muazu Bawa, during a monitoring visit to Ilorin to assess the progress of the exercise.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, Kwara is currently leading other states in the North Central zone in terms of the number of registered members.
Governor AbdulRazaq described the large turnout as an indication of growing public confidence in the APC-led administrations at both the state and federal levels. He attributed the surge in membership to what he described as good governance and people-focused policies of President Bola Tinubu.
“With over 277,000 people already registered, we are not resting on our oars. There is still room for more, and we will continue to mobilise our people despite some network challenges,” the governor said.
He commended President Tinubu’s leadership style and economic reforms, noting that they have strengthened the party and attracted more Nigerians into its fold.
The governor also praised the APC national leadership and the state executives for their commitment to the success of the exercise, adding that the e-registration process would enhance internal democracy and credibility within the party.
AbdulRazaq appealed to the party’s national leadership to extend the registration period to allow more people to participate, stressing that the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) would help ensure the authenticity of the party’s membership register.
“This exercise is unique. The NIN requirement guarantees authenticity. Although it would have been better to start earlier, we are glad it is happening now,” he said.
He further advocated a more structured and financially committed party membership, drawing parallels with practices during Nigeria’s First Republic, to promote discipline and collective ownership within the party.
In his remarks, Alhaji Muazu Bawa commended the Kwara State Government and the party leadership for what he described as an impressive performance in the registration exercise.
Bawa said Kwara currently tops the chart among North Central states, describing the turnout as unprecedented.
“I have visited Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Niger and now Kwara. Honestly, Kwara is leading. What I have seen here is commendable and reflects the quality of leadership in the state,” he said.
The APC National Vice Chairman added that the success recorded was a result of effective governance and strong party coordination, assuring that the national leadership was satisfied with the progress.
Also speaking, the state APC Chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, and the State Coordinator of the e-registration exercise, Mubarak Bello, briefed the visiting party chieftain on the process.
Bello disclosed that over 277,000 members had been successfully registered within three weeks, expressing optimism that the figure could rise to about 400,000 if the registration window is extended.
The APC e-registration exercise is aimed at updating the party’s membership database, strengthening internal democracy and positioning the party ahead of future electoral contests.
