The Kwara State Government has sealed six business facilities in Ilorin for flouting environmental regulations on noise pollution.
The clampdown, which began on Monday, marked the start of a wider enforcement campaign aimed at curbing excessive noise across the state capital.
Speaking after the inspection tour, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, said the state could no longer tolerate the disturbance caused by some business operators, particularly those situated in residential areas.
“We’ve been very diplomatic with business owners whose operations generate high levels of noise, but we can no longer overlook the discomfort it causes the public,” Buge said.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, the commissioner revealed that the ministry had received numerous complaints from residents, forcing the government to act.

“Folding our arms would mean endorsing the problem. So, we’ve begun sealing off facilities where noise levels exceed acceptable limits,” she stated.
Buge advised business owners to soundproof their facilities or operate strictly within the noise control guidelines already communicated to them.
According to her, six establishments were sealed on Monday alone, and the enforcement would continue until full compliance is achieved.
She also reminded the public and religious organisations to maintain noise levels below 55 decibels during the day and 40 decibels at night, warning that excessive noise poses serious health risks.
“This exercise is not to witch-hunt anyone,” the commissioner added. “It’s about protecting our collective wellbeing and ensuring a more peaceful environment for everyone.”
