The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has announced that its governorship ticket for the 2027 general election will not be zoned, making it open to qualified aspirants from the state’s three senatorial districts.
The state chairman of the party, Hon. Adamu Issa Bawa, made the disclosure in Ilorin during a radio programme monitored on Sunday.
Bawa, who is from Kaiama in Kwara North, said the party had resolved to prioritise competence and capacity to govern over geographical considerations.
“Our policy is that we are leaving our governorship ticket open to the three senatorial districts,” he said. “Anybody who has what it takes to govern Kwara State is free to come out and campaign. The party will provide a level playing field for all aspirants.”
The PDP’s position effectively sets aside longstanding calls for zoning, particularly from groups in Kwara North, where agitation for power rotation has been most pronounced. Similar demands have also emerged from Kwara South in recent months.
According to party leaders, the decision is aimed at presenting the strongest possible candidate capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election.
However, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions within the party. While some stakeholders have welcomed the move as a more democratic and inclusive approach, others have expressed concerns that it could alienate districts that feel politically marginalised.
As internal consultations continue, the PDP leadership maintains that the open contest will strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the next governorship race in Kwara State.
